Meet the owner

Giuseppe Pietro (‘GP’) Vetrano speaks about life at Vetraland and his love for timber.

GP Vetrano, Vetraland Selective Timber London

What’s the first thing you do every morning to start your day on the right foot?
I drink a good Italian espresso to wake up and then listen to BBC Radio 6 Music on my drive into work.

Tell us about Vetraland. How did it all start?
Timber has always been a passion of mine, it’s the most beautiful natural product. I loved working with it growing up and throughout my previous exterior design business. After years of planning I saw the opportunity to run my own timber yard in Greenwich, so I got to work!

Why the ‘Selective’ in your name?
We run our business by choosing the best materials and the best grades available. It’s always been our aim to deliver the best timber products on the market with honest low prices.

How have you seen the business evolve?
Adding more and more new products to meet clients’ requirements, it’s a wide range now! We can machine most profiles after investing in several wood working machines. We’re moving in the right direction despite the current climate, that’s a good sign for a new business.

I’m proud of what we’ve created here. It’s very satisfying to see more and more customers come back as regulars. They like the personal service and tailored advice. Deliveries on time. And the coffee of course!

Which timbers do you especially recommend paying attention to?
Siberian Larch, Western Red Cedar, Iroko and Oak are all sustainable and always in stock. They’re easy to work with and very stable following a kiln drying process. We machine these all to size on our premises and will soon have Black Walnut and Sapele too.

What does the timber industry need more of?
A strong chain of custody to protect the environment. All companies should have policies to reduce waste and encourage reusing valuable timbers. We strongly believe in this and only supply PEFC and FSC timber.

Customers must ask your opinion constantly. Is there one tip for timber that works for everyone?
Make sure that you know the particular style you’re going for and choose an appropriate timber grade. With this in mind, you can’t go wrong.

Before we say goodbye, how do you like to spend your time when you’re not working?
Our young son is keeping us very busy at the moment! Motorbikes and track days too, when the business allows a little time. Brands Hatch is my favourite track.

Vetraland – what’s in a name?

We originally adapted ‘Vetrano Landscaping’ to name our previous business, then slightly revised the Vetraland identity for our timber yard today.
